Introduction to using Abstract Drama Scripts in the drama, language and ESL classroom

The beauty of abstract dialog scripts is that students have to create the scene and theme of the play.  Together, through discussion and cooperation, they have to decide :

  • how the words should become meaningful.

  • what action lies between the lines

  • who the characters are

  • what action happened before the beginning of the script

  • what action continues to happen after the dialog ends.

The scripts are intriguing and the results of each group performing the plays will always be different . The scripts enable creativity and interest in the classroom,

It is important to note that the illustrations used are only for color and interest.  While they may be of help to the students, the students should not feel obliged to have the picture influence their own text in any way.
